Directed by Richard Eyre, Ian Kelly’s new comedy that explores the cult of the celebrity in 18th century London is coming to the West End for a limited 12-week season
The outrageous tale of comedy, tragedy and fame is transferring to the West End
During a sell-out run at the Hampstead Theatre, Mr Foote’s Other Leg earned a barrage of great reviews, described by The Observer as “rumbustious” and as “rollicking” by the Sunday Times.
Set in Georgian London, this hilarious comedy focuses on Samuel Foote, an impressionist, satirist and comedian, who has become a much-loved but sometimes despised celebrity during a time when the concept of selling a personality was gaining momentum in London.
From David Garrick to Benjamin Franklin, Foote’s friends start to ponder – Does fame actually turn you insane?
BATFA and Olivier Award-winning actor Simon Russell Beale is reprising his role of Samuel Foote in the West End transfer. Dervla Kirwin will continue playing Peg Woffington and Ian Kelly, author of the new comedy, will also reprise his role of King George.
Kelly’ new comedy is based on his award-winning biography of Samuel Foote, an 18th century dramatist, actor and theatre manager. Foote was well-known for his comedy writing and acting, and particularly for turning the loss of his leg in 1766 in a riding accident into a comedy opportunity.
Mr Foote’s Other Leg opens at the Theatre Royal Haymarket on October 28 2015 where it will run for 12 weeks until 23 January 2016.
