The West End rumour mill has been working overtime, thanks to Baz Bamigboye tweeting Show Boat is transferring to the New London Theatre this year
Show Boat went down a treat at the Crucible
Based on Edna Ferber’s powerful novel of love, loyalty and freedom that was originally published in 1926, outgoing artistic director Daniel Evans directs this new revival of Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein’s classic 1927 work.
Exploring controversial themes, including women’s rights, alcoholism, gambling and racism, Show Boat was certainly radical for its time.
Five star reviews
The story follows a group of performers on board a Mississippi show boat called the Cotton Blossom.
During its run at Sheffield’s Crucible, Evan’s lavish new production of what has been referred to as “one of the most romantic musicals of all time”, was met with great acclaim, spurring a string of highly admiring reviews from the critics.
In its five star review of Show Boat, the Telegraph described the musical as “Something special”, whereby every sound is “lush, sonorous and extravagantly beautiful.”
An ‘unmissable’ musical
Sharing the Telegraph’s enthusiasm is The Observer, which also gave the production five stars at the Crucible claiming Daniel Evan’s production of the 20th century musical classic is “unmissable.”
If the rumours are true, we can expect Show Boat to be arriving at the New London Theatre in April until sometime in January 2017, according to Baz Bamigboye’s tweet!
