Maureen Lipman and James Dreyfus reprise their roles in Harvey as the hilarious Pulitzer-winning play comes to the West End
James Dreyfus will play Elwood in Harvey
Following a short tour in the UK, Mary Chase’s comedy Harvey will play at the Theatre Royal Haymarket from March 17 – May 2, 2015.
The American playwright Mary Chase’s play Harvey premiered on Broadway in 1944. A year later Chase received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for the comedy.
Since then Harvey has been adapted for film and television, most notably in 1950 when the film was released starring James Stewart.
A six foot rabbit invisible friend!
If you’re unfamiliar with the story, Harvey is based on a friendly character called Elwood P. Dowd. Elwood’s only downside is his refusal to give up his a friend who nobody has ever seen, a six-foot three inch rabbit named Harvey.
Elwood introduces Harvey to everyone he meets, much to the disdain of his sister Veta, who is striving to climb the social ladder.
Determined to save herself and her daughter Myrtle from further embarrassment, Veta commits her brother to a hospital for the mentally unwell.
A series of errors unravel, including the rather handsome and flirtatious Dr. Sanderson committing Veta to the hospital instead of Elwood.
Maureen Lipman will reprise her role as Veta at the Theatre Royal Haymarket. Lipman is starring alongside James Dreyfus who plays Elwood in the UK tour of Harvey this February and March. Dreyfus will also continue his role in Harvey, playing the affable Elwood.
Lipman and Dreyfus will be joined by David Bamber, Desmond Barrit and Ingrid Oliver.
Harvey is directed by Lindsay Posner and designed by Peter Mckintosh.
This hilarious Pulitzer Prize-winning play will run for two hours twenty minutes, including one interval.
Harvey is suitable for audiences aged eight and above.
