The award-winning ‘The Play That Goes Wrong’ will transfer to the Duchess Theatre with production beginning in mid-September
The hilarious slap-stick comedy is coming to the Duchess Theatre
In 2012 The Play That Goes On arrived on London’s theatre scene with prolific success. The comedy originally opened as a one-act performance at the Old Red Lion in the capital. The hit show was then transferred to the Trafalgar Studios. Since it began touring, The Play That Goes On has generated great reviews and won numerous accolades and rewards, including winning the Whatsonstage.com award for Best New Comedy 2014.
Where Faulty Towers meets Noises Off
Having been cited by one critic as being somewhere between Faulty Towers and Noises Off, this comical spoof of a college theatre production in which, as the title suggests, anything can go wrong, has audiences laughing out loud. The finely-tuned farce of slapstick comedy introduces the ‘Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society’. The drama group are attempting to put on a 1920s murder mystery show. As you might imagine, the production doesn’t go as smoothly as planned and the accident-prone performers battle on regardless.
Asides being dubbed as “ridiculously funny’ by Libby Purves, “genuinely hilarious” by The Daily Telegraph and given five stars by the Daily Mail, The Play That Goes Wrong has enjoyed celebrity endorsement. Joanna Lumley for example, said the comedy was “spectacularly funny and bitingly accurate.”
An incredible journey
The play was co-written by Mischief Theatre Company members Henry Shields, Jonathan Sayer and Henry Lewis and is directed by Mark Bell. Talking about The Play That Goes Wrong’s incredible journey from a pub performance to London theatre sensation, Henry Lewis, Mischief Theatre Artistic Director said:
“Our show has had an amazing journey thus far – starting in a room above a pub in north London, with a dog in the next room barking loudly throughout – helped along its way considerably, to our delight, by word of mouth. To bring our sense of humour to different communities all over the country has been a real pleasure and now we are incredibly excited to be coming to the West End.”
‘Thus far’ is the operative term here as its transfer to the Duchess theatre with production due to start on September 14, 2014, promises to be a new and exciting chapter for the hilarious play – A show where misplaced props, mistimed lines and a collapsing set, creates a tide of hysteria in the auditorium.
