It has been confirmed that Romeo and Juliet is one of Sir Kenneth Branagh’s five play season at the Garrick Theatre. It has also be established that the title roles will be played by two highly-acclaimed British actors – Richard Madden and Lily James.

Forbidden love

Branagh will direct the new production of Shakespeare’s heart-breaking tale of forbidden love and the eternal rivalry between the Veronese Montague and Capulet families.

In a story of young love that unfolds with devastating tragedy, Romeo and Juliet is of course one of Shakespeare’s most famous plays.

Lily James and Richard Madden locking lips again

The production will see Lily James and Richard Madden lock lips once more, following their recent onscreen romance as Cinderella and Prince Charming in Branagh’s hit Disney blockbuster.

As well as being reunited with the stars of Branagh’s film Cinderella, the year-long residency at the Garrick will see Branagh work with associates Rob Ashford and Olivier Award-winner Christopher Oram.

Romeo and Juliet will run at the Garrick Theatre from 12 May 2016 until 13 August 2016.

The production of Shakespeare’s classic tale is one of five plays to run at the Garrick Theatre in the first season of the Kenneth Branagh Theatre Company’s star-studded year-long residency.
