Dreamgirls will make its UK premiere at the Savoy Theatre this November
Celebrated singer/songwriters Ruth Brown and Karen Mav are to alternate the role of Effie White, Dreamgirls’ soulful singer, when Amber Riley is not due to perform.
Both Ruth Brown and Karen Mav are well-known television names. Ms Brown was riveted to TV renown when she appeared on the first series of The Voice and, mentored by Tom Jones, managed to reach the semi-finals. The talented singer has gone on to release her own UK single and is due to shortly debut her new album.
Karen Mav found fame on ITV’s talent show The X Factor in 2015 when she fascinated both the judges and the audience with enthralling versions of Whitney Houston’s I Will Always Love You, and Etta James’ I’d Rather Go Blind.
Speaking of the newest additions to the fabulous Dreamgirls’ cast, the show’s producer Sonia Friedman said:
“This is fantastic news for the production. Casting Amber Riley is of course thrilling as she is the most extraordinary talent to star on our show, but now to be able to announce that Ruth Brown and Karen Mav will be joining the show to cover Amber and share performances on the night that Amber will not be on is just fantastic.”
Amber Riley will star as Effie White for seven performances out of eight per week when the musical has its UK premiere at the Savoy Theatre in November this year.
The ultra-talented Ruth Brown and Karen Mav will alternate the vocally-demanding role of Effie White when Ms Riley is not scheduled to play on Wednesdays.
Dreamgirls first opened on Broadway in 1981. The much-loved, award-winning musical is centred on the success of various R&B artists, including The Supremes, James Brown, Jackie Wilson, and others. The story follows the lives of ‘The Dreams’, a trio of young female artists from Chicago and their inspiring rise to fame in the 60s.
Dreamgirls is showing at the Savoy Theatre from Saturday 19 November, 2016 until Saturday March 11, 2017.
