Theatregoers searching for London Wicked tickets are certain to be pleased to hear that one of their favourite musicals could soon be making a move to the big screen, if Hollywood rumours currently circulating are to be believed.

An adaptation of The Wizard of Oz (combined with a 1995 novel by Gregory Maguire), Wicked has smashed both London and Broadway box office records since it first hit the New York stage in 2003 – and now the runaway success could continue on the silver screen, with director of Billy Elliot Stephen Daldry now being linked to the cinematic version.

And in further news that is sure to excite all One Direction fans the world over, big-haired frontman Harry Styles is being touted for one of the lead roles in the film, alongside Glee star Lea Michele (who plays Rachel Berry in the hit TV series) – who also performed Defying Gravity, one of the most well-known songs of the musical, in the first series of Glee… so tipping her to be the one to claim the role of wicked witch Elphaba seems like a good shout.

Since its premiere back in 2006, Wicked has been reaping awards left, right and centre in the UK and beyond, including The Dress Circle award for The Greatest Musical, an Olivier Award for Most Popular Show, a Grammy for Best Musical Show Album, an Eddy Award, and was named as Entertainment Weekly’s Best Musical of the Decade – so if you haven’t seen it already, it might be a good idea to do just that!
