Venue Description – Royal Court Theatre

Known as the ‘writer’s theatre’, the Royal Court Theatre is the UK’s leading national theatre company devoted to new work by innovative writers both from the UK and across the globe. The theatre prides itself on being a breeding ground for nurturing writers – established, new and undiscovered.

Situated in Sloane Square in the heart of London, the Royal Court Theatre is conveniently positioned for theatregoers keen on witnessing some highly innovative work. In fact such is the Royal Court Theatre’s popularity that more than 120,000 people visit the venue each year, with thousands more going on to see the work produced by the theatre through transfers to the West End and Broadway and to other national and international locations.

The Royal Court Theatre’s writers are pioneers in crafting provocative theatre, designed to alert and inspire audiences and to influence budding and future writers. By encouraging conversation and debate between writers and the audience, the Royal Court Theatre actively promotes writer and audience collaboration.

The Royal Court opened in 1870. In 1882 alterations were made to the theatre by Alexandra Peebles, in which capacity was increased to 728. However, in 1887 the theatre was closed and the building demolished.

The present Royal Court Theatre situated to the east of Sloane Square opened in 1888 with a capacity of 841 in a dress circle, stalls, gallery and amphitheatre. In 1932 the theatre shut its doors and was used as a cinema from 1935 to 1940 until it was eventually closed due to bomb damage during the War.

Theatre architect Robert Cromie reconstructed the building’s interior and the theatre re-opened in 1952, with a decreased capacity of 500. In 1956 the Royal Court was acquired by the English Stage Company and 16 years later the theatre became a Grade II listed building.

Over the decades to the present day, directors, writers, actors and audiences rely on the work produced at the Royal Court for the classic plays of the future. The Royal Court Theatre’s ethos to, as George Devine the first Artistic Director of the English Stage Company stated, “Create a vital, modern theatre of experiment”, is still very much alive and flourishing today, much to the delight of all who visit the Royal Court Theatre.
