It’s been 17 years since the Hollywood actress made her West End debut. Now Nicole Kidman will return to the London stage, playing British scientist Rosalind Franklin in Photograph 51
Nicole Kidman to star as Rosalind Franklin at the Noel Coward Theatre
Written by Anna Zeigler, Photograph 51 traces the life of Rosalind Franklin who supplied the X-ray images, which ultimately led to the discovery of the double helix structure of DNA in 1953. Despite the phenomenal impact Franklin’s discovery made, she failed to gain the recognition she deserved until after her death.
Anna Zeigler’s play explores the scientist’s journey to the discovery and why her achievements were masked in obscurity.
Nicole Kidman will play the role of Rosalind Franklin in the UK premiere of Photograph 51 at the Noel Coward Theatre.
‘Pure theatrical Viagra’
In 1998 the Oscar-winning actress made her debut on the London stage performing in David Hare’s ‘The Blue Room’. The play reached great critical acclaim and Kidman’s performance was described as “pure theatrical Viagra.”
Photograph 51 is directed by Michael Grandage and will reunite the British director and the Australian actress following their collaboration in the feature film ‘Genius’. The play also sees the return of Grandage’s theatre company to the West End, following a successful season in 2013/2014, which included British actor Jude Law star as Henry V.
A privilege to return to the London stage
Talking about returning to the West End, Nicole Kidman said:
“It’s a privilege to be returning to London theatre in Anna Ziegler’s extraordinary play Photograph 51, portraying the life of Rosalind Franklin. I’m looking forward to being part of an amazing team both on stage and behind the scenes – a company who put access at the centre of what they do.”
Photograph 51 will run at the Noel Coward Theatre from September 14 until November 21, 2015.
