Jonathan Kent’s highly-acclaimed production of Gypsy will stay at the Savoy Theatre for an extended run until 28 November 2015
Imelda Staunton as the determined Rose
Starring Imelda Staunton as the indomitable Rose, Kent’s production of what is considered by many as the “greatest of the Broadway musicals”, has received great reviews since it opened at the Chichester Festival Theatre in 2014.
“The most exciting thing I have seen on a stage, scintillating,” wrote The Times.
An enthusiasm shared by many, including the Mail On Sunday, which referred to Gypsy at the Savoy Theatre as “Jonathan Kent’s dazzling revival.”
A determined showbiz mother
Gypsy relives a true story about an ambitious showbiz mother named Rose. Determined to find success, Rose makes her way across America with her daughters, Baby June and Louise, taking part in their unsophisticated vaudeville act.
Rose’s quest for showbiz stardom is during a changing era of entertainment, when vaudeville is being overtaken by burlesque. These changing times together with her daughters’ quest for independence, means Rose is forced to rethink her strategy.
A dazzling revival
Alongside Imelda Staunton playing Rose, Laura Pulver and Gemma Sutton have reprised their roles of Louise and June in Jonathan Kent’s production.
This dazzling revival of the memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee that was first performed in 1959 has a book by Arthur Laurents, music by Jule Styne, and lyrics by Stephen Sondhein. The choreography is by Stephen Mear.
Gypsy is now booking at the Savoy Theatre in the West End until November 28, 2015.
