Blood Brothers at the Phoenix theatre, London’s third-longest-running musical, has added an extra 16 performances due to popular demand.

Blood Brothers has been running continuously in London for 24 years, and announced earlier this month that the show in London would close. However, the closing performance has now been extended and the West End show is now due to close on the 10th November 2012.

Willy Russell’s Blood Brothers was first staged in Liverpool in 1981, before a West End transfer to the Lyric Theatre in London. In 1988, Bill Kenwright revived the musical at the Albery Theatre, in London’s West End, where it won critical acclaim and was awarded best musical. In 1991 Blood Brothers transferred to it’s current theatre, the Phoenix Theatre in Charing Cross Road, London.

The current West End cast of Blood Brothers features Vivienne Carlyle (as Mrs Johnstone), Philip Stewart (Narrator), Mark Rice Oxley (Mickey), Paul Christopher (Eddie) and Abigail Jaye (Mrs Lyons).

Although no new show has been confirmed at the Phoenix theatre it is rumoured that Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s Starlight Express, the musical featuring a cast on roller-skates that played for many successful years previously at the Apollo Victoria theatre. It would be a welcome return for this exciting and energetic show.
