For the first time in 40 years Gypsy is returning to the West End and the legendary Imelda Staunton is playing the leading role.

Imelda Rose puts on a dynamic performance as Momma Rose in Gypsy

It’s been dubbed as one of the greatest of Broadway musicals and it’s to reunite iconic, multi-award winning actor Imelda Staunton and director Jonathan Kent. Yes, it’s safe to say the West End is excited by the news that Gypsy is transferring to the Savoy Theatre in 2015.

A true showbiz story

Gypsy tells the true story of the ambitious showbiz mother Momma Rose. The story is based on the memoirs written by Gypsy Rose Lee in the late 1950s.

The burlesque entertainer travels across America with her two daughters in search of success in a changing era of entertainment.

However, Rose’s daughters, June and Louise, do not share their mother’s enthusiasm and have agendas of their own…

‘Nothing less than a triumph’

During its run at the Chichester Festival Theatre, Gypsy sold out and was hailed as “nothing less than a trump.”

The musical generated a string of five-star reviews, accrediting Imelda Staunton’s incredible performance.

“Staunton’s strength of determination makes this quite possibly the most exciting thing I have seen on stage. A truly great performance and a truly great show,” wrote The Times.

This popular musical fable has music by Julie Styne, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by Arthur Laurents. It is choreographed by Stephen Mear.

In a strictly limited run, Gypsy opens at the Savoy Theatre on April 15, 2015, with preview taking place from March 28, 2015.

Further castings for Gypsy are expected to be announced shortly.
