The Full Monty: Shows in London Review

on

Yesterday, our very own Nicci travelled up to Leeds to watch The Full Monty at the Leeds Grand Theatre. The production is currently touring the country, ahead of its arrival in London’s West End early next year.

Here’s what Nicci thought of the production:

The play is such a bold piece of entertainment that I would be more inclined to call it a show than a play. It does include music but as a backdrop to the story rather than as part of the narrative. The production values are so high that the set, mechanics and set changes could rival any of the top West End musicals.

It is brilliantly funny, laced with northern humour and a dash of slapstick that has you laughing all the way through. The writer, Simon Beaufoy, still manages to weave the darker notes of male desperation through the story and there are some quite upsetting and difficult to watch scenes. The well known story is set in during a time of recession and the play touches on each of the character’s inner turmoil brought on by lack of work. By the end of the play you are completely immersed in the characters and the finale does not disappoint. The audience was predominately female but the play’s themes and characters are aimed at men more than women.

The Full Monty will be taking over from Peter and Alice at the Noel Coward Theatre. The Full Monty will begin performances on 27th February 2014 – to book tickets click here.
